Alessandro Di Benedetto 6ème de la Route du Rhum-Destination Guadeloupe en IMOCA

Alessandro Di Benedetto (Team Plastique – AFM Telethon) placed 6th in the Route du Rhum-Destination Guadeloupe in IMOCA

The yachtsman persevered to the very end, completing this 10th edition of the legendary transatlantic race from Saint-Malo to Pointe-à-Pitre (Guadeloupe).

Alessandro was relentlessly toiling on a 1997 model boat, the only IMOCA committed to conserving a fixed keel whereas the new generations have more efficient swing keels.

Several obstacles arose, both technical (a damaged rudder blade repaired at sea, torn sails, an autopilot breakdown) and physical (back pain and a sacrum injury after taking a fall on board, severe tendinitis and intoxication). His determination was truly put to the test yet proved unfaltering.

Facing challenges and excelling are some points that yacht racing and the AFM* Telethon share.

Aboard Team Plastique-AFM Telethon, Alessandro Di Benedetto also embarked his committed support in raising awareness for a cause and promised to sail a great race on behalf of the patients and their families, as well as the Telethon teams and the many volunteers involved in this great adventure.

He kept his word by pushing his physical and mental limits and by optimizing the full potential of his boat!

Alessandro Di Benedetto (skipper of Team Plastique-AFM Telethon)

« I am very happy because the race went well, it was very intense, I knew that I would arrive here much more worn out than at Vendée Globe and this is indeed the case.

I don’t know how I am even standing up right now, during the last miles I almost fell asleep when the security boats were beside me.

I’m very pleased about the repairs that I made at sea, especially the rudder blades, I think that making these repairs without stopping was crucial in pushing ahead of Tanguy (De Lamotte, Initiatives Coeur) who made a stop for the same kind of problem, this made all the difference in the end. His boat can sail between 5 and 7 knots faster than mine, it was very close!

It was a great finish for me, plenty of boats came to greet me, my team, friends, it was really nice, I lit up the flares to celebrate.

I am very tired, but very happy!»
